1. GOLDEN MONEY PLANT (Epipremnum aureum)

'Golden Money Plant' or 'Money Plant Neon' got its name from its shiny Lime colour leaves. It is easily propagated through cuttings and has a fast growing habit. 

It can be grown both in Soil and directly in water but for better growth and development, prefer soil as planting media. It keeps your indoor fresh and spreads positivity in and around you.  

This variety differs from 'Desi Money Plant' that we usually see in our homes. Today there are many new varieties available in the market that can be a good replacement to desi variety. The desi ones have big, green leaves which are comparatively less shiny. 

Since, this variety is easily available in market, so for indoors, money plant neon can be the best option. It is most commonly used plant in indoor vertical gardens also.

2. MONEY PLANT N’JOY (Epipremnum aureum)

These have comparatively smaller leaves than “golden money plant” and they posses attractive variegation which make this variety a lot more attractive among plant lover. Most noteworthy, they enjoy well drained planting media and need good light intensity indoors to thrive well.

Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) 

Nephrolepis, in general , prefer moderate humidity, semi-shade and porous compost. Liquid manuring and regular watering should be done during the growing period from March to September. It is usually propagated by division of clumps.

'Golden Fern' or 'Gold Boston Fern' is among people's favourite plant for indoors. Use of boston fern as hanging basket plant can be a very good choice.It is one of the ferns that posses bigger, broader leaves having lime colour that reflects positivity and serenity. 

Golden ferns are always our priority for indoors and vertical gardens, as it provides contrast with plants having darker leaves. These are moisture loving plants with light weight potting media.

4. ENGLISH IVY CREEPER (Hedera Helix)

Ivies are very popular house plants throughout the world, very attractive and well-shaped in containers, particularly in hanging baskets, prefer semi-shady location, not too damp, thrive well in a wide range of climate from tropical to temperate, but moderate to slightly low temperature is likes by most ivies. 

Variegated forms prefer more light; high temperature adversely affects growth. Liquid manuring is needed from April to September for attractive growth of the plant. Some species are also grown in th open in temperate countries. They are multiplied by cuttings at any time of year and will take root quickly and easily in sandy compost.


English ivy comes with so many different varieties namely Midget, Eva, Mona Liza, Calico, Paper Doll, Gold Child, Ingrid Liz, Big Shot and Mini Adam. 


These varieties come in green as well as variegated leaves. It is very fast growing ground cover as well as Hanging Pot plants with dense small foliage. It proves to be the best choice, if one prefers fast growing hanging basket plant or a ground cover.

5. WANDERING JEW (Zebrina pendula)

Zebrina pendula commonly known as an inchplant” or wandering jew” or "silvery wandering jew".
It has attractive striped purplish-green leaves having dense foliage which goes well as hanging basket plant. The upper leaf surface is green to purple with two wide, silvery-white stripes, while the lower leaf surface is a uniform deep magenta. 

They have succulent stems, which root wherever they touch soil. This plant does best in light shade outdoors, but in bright light indoors also. In low light conditions, stems lose lower leaves and the leaves lose much of their coloring. 

Zebrina needs a bright, airy location and is ideal for window sills, balcony and garden, alone and in combination with other plants. Colour of foliage becomes more attractive with bright diffused light or partial sun in the morning and it can tolerate sun for a longer period in mild climate and in the rainy season. 

Several rooted cuttings are planted in pot or hanging baskets and the shoots hang below covering the entire pot. Pinching of shoots promote branching and cuttings root easily in sand.

6. PURPLE HEART (Setcreasea pallid 'purpurea')

Purple Heart can be grown in full shade and in wide varieties of soils. It can be easily propagated by stem cuttings, which root easily. Purple Heart produces small, pale pink flowers from tips to stems.

A very useful and attractive plant for ground and pot, it can also also be grown for edging. The plant becomes colourful in bright sun, in shade the colour changes to dull green.

7. SWEET POTATO VINE (Ipomea batatas)

Ipomea batatas or sweet potato vines are tender perennial ground covers which come in 2 shades i.e. Lime and Purple colour. 

These can be planted in full sun to partial shade. They love moist, well drained soils as ferns and are easily propagated through stem cuttings. Due to its dense attractive foliage, it is a good option to grow as hanging pot plant.

8. SPIDER PLANT (Chlorophytum comosum)

Chlorophytum commonly known as spider plant can be used as hanging basket plant for interiors. It has many nicknames such as “ribbon plant” and “airplane plant".

It is easy to grow and has low maintenance. It has variegated leaves having linear stripes on the leaf. To maintain its variegation you need to place the plant near the window or an area receiving bright sunlight reflection.  It purifies the air in your home by absorbing carbon monoxide and other toxic elements.


It can tolerate both shade and partial sun and the colour of variegated form becomes more attractive in partial sun or bright diffused light. A porous and moist compost is necessary for good growth. 


They are safe, non toxic plants and can serve as best option for indoor hanging pot. It can be easily propagated simply by division or from the plantlets.

9. PICTHER PLANT (Nepenthes sp.)

Pitcher plant comes under the list of carnivorous plants because of its modified leaves called pitchers or pitfalls. The vibrant coloured pitchers attract insects and bugs, which are then trapped and consumed by the plant. 

Besides all this, it is best option as hanging basket plant for kitchens. This plant will attract small insects in your kitchen and will keep you kitchen free from them.

10. MAIDEN HAIR FERN (Adiatum)

Maiden hair ferns are delicate hanging basket plants that attract peoples by its beautiful fronds. It got its name from its delicate look.  They require good moisture to thrive well and are very much sensitive to dry soil. Dry soil leads fronds to turn brown and die. These ferns thrive well in humid and bright areas of your home. 

The maiden-hair ferns with the fragile leaves need more careful treatment than other most robust ferns. The plants prefer a temperature of about 22-28 °C during the growing period, about 15°C during the resting period in winter, shaded position and moderately moist atmosphere. They should be grown in equal parts of loam and leaf mould; propagated by spore or division of clumps.

CONCLUSION

Hanging basket plants neither thrive well in direct sunlight outdoor in harsh summers nor in low lights areas indoor. The best condition for hanging basket plants to thrive well is semi-shade areas outdoor and bright lit areas indoor.

When it comes to feeding, hanging basket plants enjoy liquid fertilizers. Many people just water plants and expect them to grow healthier and bushier but as we need food for proper growth and development, likewise plant also require the same. 

Most essential nutrients are Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K). You may go for 19:19:19 NPK, EPSOM SALT, MONO AMMONIUM PHOSPHATE 2-3 g per Liter of water every 10 days alternately. This will promote foliage growth and overall plant development to fulfill their basic needs. 

Another important activity that should be brought into practice is proper misting or spraying foliage with water using spray bottle. Most of the house plant need humidity to maintain their shine and proper growth. Regular spraying of water and avoiding plant from keeping them under fan will help in maintaining humidity indoor.
